The Hurricanes were able to defeat the third place team in the Western Confrence the Detroit Redwings by a margin of 3-0.
The past few games have been nail bitters for the Hurricanes and their fans by fluctuating their playoff hopes. If they want to stay in playoff contention, they're going to need to keep up their game.
Tonight they were able to get a much needed win by not letting Detroit score a single goal managing 42 shots on net.
None the less the game was exhilarating, but you could obviously tell Carolina wanted and needed the win much more than Detroit.
It wasn't until the second period the first goal was scored. Derek Joslin scored his second goal of the season on a powerplay goal four minutes in. Ten minutes later, rookie Jeff Skinner scored his 30th goal of the season on a beautiful wrap-around. Skinner is now the seventh youngest rookie to score 30 goals in an entire season.
Erik Cole finally topped off the 'Canes win with a goal five minutes into the third period.
The main thing that gave Carolina momentum was the first goal on a power play, Detroit just couldn't stop them after that.
Currently they are only two points behind the Rangers. If they can manage to win their final two games, they might be able to squeak into the playoffs.
This was a must win situation for Carolina. Even with a sloppy first period they were able to make up for it in the second and third by pulling off a victory and keeping their playoff hopes alive.
