Henrik Lundqvist Gets League Leading 11th Shutout of Season
Along with the rest of the New York Rangers, Henrik Lundqvist has been playing great hockey lately, and is helping the Rangers not only make the playoffs, but is helping them move up in the standings too.
Like most seasons with the Rangers, they got off to a great start this season. "Henk" was playing great between the pipes and the Rangers were one of the top teams in the whole league. The Rangers then hit a cold spot where many offensive players were injured including Marian Gaborik and Vinny Prospal. Lundqvist too hit a cold patch for a little bit, which led to back up Martin Biron getting more starts.
Biron got injured in late February and Henk hasn't looked back since. The all-star goalie has started the last 20 games for the Rangers, and is 8-1-1 in his last ten games. The Rangers fell out of the playoffs in February but are now tied for seventh with the slumping Montreal Canadiens.
Lundqvist last night, extended his lead for shutouts when he recorded his 11th of the season. The Rangers beat the Bruins 1-0 in Boston yesterday thanks to some great saves by Lundqvist and a early first period goal by rookie, Derek Stepan. In the last ten games, Henrik has three shutouts, and also has only given up one goal in two other games.
The Rangers have been playing some great hockey, and most of the team is back from injury.
This season, the offense has been lead by Ryan Callahan and Brandon Dubkinsky, two young american skaters who have picked it up when Gaborik was injured. Respectively they have 47 and 51 points, with Callahan leading the team in goals and Dubinsky leading the team in assists. "Duby" and "Cally", as Ranger fans call them have sparked the Rangers offense this season with others like Brian Boyle, Wojtek Wolski, and of course Marian Gaborik also contributing.
Lundqvist was quoted saying " I am happy with the way (The) guys are playing right now. As I said the other day, it is exciting. I check the standings-everything in my life is about getting ready for the next game". With that attitude, it looks like no one will be stopping the Rangers or Lundqvist soon.
The Rangers finish off the season with games against the Sabres, Islanders, and Flyers this week, and then play the Bruins, Thrashers, and Devils to end the season in early April. As of now, the Rangers are projected as the seventh seed in the playoffs and would play the Washington Capitals. The Rangers are 3-1 vs the Capitals this year including 7-0 and 6-0 victories. Still, with at least five games left to play, the Rangers can still move up of standings more.
